Hwy 97 Forest Lake construction begins June 2Construction will start soon on the Hwy 97 road improvement project in Forest Lake. If you live in or travel through the project area, you’ll need to plan on additional travel time due to road closures and detours. Crew will begin their work on the west end of Hwy 97 between Hornsby St. and Falcon Ave. in Forest Lake. By 5 a.m. on Monday, June 2, Hwy 97 will be closed in both directions between Hornsby St. and Falcon Ave. The following detours will be in place for through traffic: - Eastbound detour: Northbound I-35, eastbound Hwy 8 to southbound Hwy 61.
- Westbound detour: Northbound Hwy 61, westbound Hwy 8 to southbound I-35.
- Southbound I-35 to eastbound Hwy 97 detour: Southbound I-35, Broadway Ave., northbound I-35, eastbound Hwy 8 to southbound Hwy 61.
Local access for residents and businesses will be maintained throughout construction, though routes will change periodically. Residents and businesses are encouraged to visit the project website for specific local access routes. Hornsby St. and all I-35 ramps in the area will remain open during this first stage of work. Hwy 97 between Falcon Ave. and Hwy 61 will also be open to traffic. Crews expect to reopen the intersection of Hwy 97 and Everton Ave. to traffic by Labor Day weekend. The rest of this year’s work is expected to be complete by late fall. Please drive with care in work zones:- Slow down when approaching every work zone, then navigate with care and caution.
- Stay alert; work zones constantly change.
- Watch for workers and slow-moving equipment.
- Obey posted speed limits. The fine for a violation in a work zone is $300.
- Minimize distractions behind the wheel.
- Be patient; expect delays, especially during peak travel times.

More about this projectBeginning this spring, construction will begin on Hwy 97 between I-35 and Hwy 61 in Forest Lake. Construction will include resurfacing the road, constructing a single-lane roundabout at Fenway Ave., building a multi-use trail for pedestrians and bicyclists, constructing medians and adding turn lanes in specific locations.
